How Do You Know When the Time is Right to Junk a Car?

I thought we’d get to see forever
But forever’s gone away
It’s so hard to say goodbye to yesterday

With apologies to Boyz II Men, the truth is that it is hard to say goodbye, not just to significant places and people in our lives, but also to stuff. As silly as it may seem logically, we get attached to our possessions and have trouble knowing when to let go.

This is even more true of cars, which people often become attached to on a deeper level. We coddle them. We talk to them. We name them. (An author friend of mine even titled her first novel after her car’s name.) That makes it exceedingly difficult to junk a car when the time comes.

It makes sense. People spend a lot of time in their cars. Our cars are there for us when no one else is– getting us from A to B, listening to our outrageously awful singing voices and taking us home safely to the Bronx at the end of a long day.

Like all things, though, the time we spend with our car must come to an end. So how do you know when it’s time to throw in the towel and junk a car? Here are some questions you can ask yourself when contemplating the decision:

  • Is it costing more to insure, park and repair than it’s worth?
  • Do you have to take it to the shop twice a month or more?
  • Is the body looking like more rust than metal?
  • Does it have trouble starting?
  • Is its appearance making your home or neighborhood look bad?
  • Is it leaking fluids frequently?

If you answered yes to a few of these questions, it’s probably time to consider the “junk a car” option. It may be hard to let go, but you will get some extra cash to put towards a new car, and your old friend will be disposed of in an environmentally friendly way.

It may may be hard to junk a car, but like the song says, it’s always hard to say goodbye to yesterday.
